Positive expectations despite of the slight decrease in Port of Rauma 2016 traffic
“The start of the year 2016 was quite slow but during the summer months the situation normalized and traffic kept on increasing throughout the rest of the year” sums up managing director Hannu Asumalahti. “Due to the upcoming positive developments, we believe we are able to increase the traffic volumes in 2017.”
In 2016, the total traffic in Port of Rauma was 5.60 million tons and 256 000 TEUs, which means 2.5 percent decrease compared to 2015. The port’s total traffic consisted of 3.84 million tons of exports (-3.6 %) and 1.73 million tons of imports (+2.1 %) and only 0.03 million tons of domestic traffic. Number of vessels was 1 086, which was 35 less than in 2015.
Export of liquids, pulp & sawn goods and import of oil products & metals experienced positive figures. On the other side, the export of paper & grain and import of china clay & general cargo decreased in 2016. Noticeable was that the increase in export and import of pulp continued for a second year in a row. Also, Port of Rauma has become the 2nd biggest port for sawn wood transportations in the recent years.
”The biggest news of 2016 was the start of our huge 60 M€ investments. Extension of current container terminal and dredging & deepening the Rauma channel will benefit the whole Finnish foreign trade.” says Asumalahti. “Both projects will continue throughout the year 2017 and will be finished by the end of the year. We have very positive expectations of the future as the investments will ensure the development of Rauma port operations in the years to come.”
