GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR EMERGENCIES:

Assess the situation. Using your judgment is more important than speed. Find out what has happened, how many people need help and what kind of help.

Call the emergency number 112. Tell the operator what has happened, where, and are people injured. Do not hang up until you are told to do so!

Inform the Main gate, tel. +358 (0)44 793 4700. Port traffic supervisors will arrange guidance to the accident scene.

Rescue. Approach the dangerous area without risking your own health or that of others. First rescue any people whose life is in danger.

Prevent the accident from escalating.

Provide first aid.

ACTION IN A FIRE:

Rescue people who are in immediate danger.

Issue an emergency alarm by pressing a fire alarm button and by calling emergency number 112.

Inform the Main gate, tel. +358 (0)44 793 4700. Port traffic supervisors will arrange guidance to the accident scene.

Extinguish and restrict. Use extinguishers and hydrants designed for initial fire fighting. Prevent the fire from spreading. In case of a fire occurring inside a building or a storage shelter, close doors, windows and ventilation, and remove any flammable materials away from the fire.

Guide rescue units to the fire area, if necessary, and describe the situation.

ACTION IN A CHEMICAL ACCIDENT:

Call emergency number 112.

Provide information: what has happened; are people injured; which chemical is involved in the accident (class and UN number); is there a fire, or a leakage; is there a risk of explosion or fire; what is the accident site like (guidance, if needed); are there public traffic areas near and what is the direction of the wind.

Do not hang up until you are told to do so.

Inform the Main Gate, tel. +358 (0)44 793 4700. Port traffic supervisors will arrange guidance to the accident scene.

When approaching the scene of an accident that involves cargo (not only dangerous goods): remove outsiders from the area and keep them away; if necessary, arrange guidance to the area; do not walk on or touch the leaking substance; avoid breathing in fumes, smoke or dust, even if the materials are not dangerous goods; do not assume that gases and fumes are not dangerous, even if there is no smell.

ACTION IN AN OIL SPILL:

Report the oil spill you have detected to port traffic supervisors, tel. +358 (0) 500 597 579.

The port’s own actions for oil spill prevention and response are to a large extent based on practical measures assisting the rescue services in every possible manner. The action taken for purposes of oil spill prevention and response depends on the conditions in each case.
