LOOK AFTER THE ENVIRONMENT:
- Sort wastes into correct waste containers in compliance with the waste disposal instructions. The waste collection points are indicated in the port area map.
- Oil is a dangerous substance, and therefore any signs of an oil spill should be reported to the port traffic supervisors (save the number +358 (0)500 597 579 on your phone) and to the operator in control of the area concerned. Oily waste must be delivered to a collection point of hazardous substances.
- Minimise environmental impact using appropriate equipment and accessories in all work.
MINIMISE EMISSIONS AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Everybody working in or visiting the port shall protect the environment in the port area for their own part by minimising adverse impact on the environment as best as they can.
When handling goods, it shall be ensured that the port or the environment in the port is not unnecessarily soiled, and no unnecessary noise is produced. As the port authority, Port of Rauma can order goods handling to be discontinued, if it creates dust or noise pollution.
The master of the vessel shall ensure that no substances or waste contaminating the environment are discharged from the vessel. The master shall also ensure that the operation of the vessel does not cause unreasonable harm or inconvenience to other users of the port. If maintenance work is carried out on the vessel while in port, it must be ensured that the generated paint, rust, sandblasting, and similar residues and waste do not end up in the sea. The waste shall be delivered for disposal in accordance with the waste disposal instructions of Port of Rauma.
The port traffic supervisors (tel. +358 (0)500 597 579) shall be immediately notified in case goods have fallen overboard or oil or any other pollutant has leaked in the water and the operator responsible for the accident shall take appropriate measures for their removal.
EFFORTS IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Port of Rauma recognises in all its operations the significance of environmental protection. The activities carried out in the port are steered by the environmental permit granted to Port of Rauma in 2007; the companies operating in the port area and all other stakeholders are required to comply with the permit. The high quality of the environmental programme of Port of Rauma is witnessed by the ISO 14100 certificate. In addition to the conditions of the environmental permit, the internal operation of Port of Rauma is based on its own Ordinance.
The evaluation of environmental aspects and risk assessment are a key part of the daily operation of Port of Rauma. Environmental programmes have been developed for each department taking into account the basic tasks of the department and the associated environmental risks, and these programmes create the basis for all the activities carried out. The environmental programme describes the correct procedures to reduce the environmental impact of the daily work, and at the same time, to save resources. Environmental aspects have also been considered in the scorecards that steer working; one of the objectives defined in the scorecards is that both the employees and the customer are familiar with the conditions of the environmental permit and comply with them.
