Rauman Satama Oy has decided to launch a permitting process for future needs to expand the harbor basin and build a new berth on the western edge of the Petäjäs expansion area. “According to the port company’s experience, permit processes can take years, so preparations for expansion projects must be made in good time,” says Hannu Asumalahti, CEO of Rauman Satama Oy. “Such a large investment cannot be made in the reserve, but requires a large amount of new port traffic.” The dredging work on the Rauma fairway to a 12-meter access depth and the related extension work on the container terminal were completed in 2017-18. In the autumn of 2018, Rauman Satama Oy has determined where it would be cheapest to build a 12-meter-long harbor pool and berths. Based on the study, it is most advantageous to carry out the expansion of the harbor basin and the construction of the quay on the west side of the harbor part of Ulko-Petäjäs. Rauman Satama Oy has published a call for tenders for the last undeveloped area of the Ulko-Petäjäs extension area. The contractor is likely to complain during August. The contract is scheduled to begin in the fall and continue for a total of a couple of years. The backfill area will have to be built from imported quarry, which will lead to a long contract period.

The deepening of the Rauma waterway to 12 meters, the expansion of the container terminal and the improvements made to the container pier have served sea transport at the end of last year. The two-meter-deep waterway enables much more efficient transport, with ships being able to load up to twice as much cargo. The state of the sea area was monitored during the project through extensive water and fisheries monitoring. Ex-post monitoring will continue in 2018 in accordance with the water permit conditions.
Maritime connections serve the entire business community
The expansion of the container terminal was carried out at the same time as Rihtniemi’s 12-meter fairway recess. “The projects supported each other and now that both have been completed, the competitiveness of the Port of Rauma will improve significantly. The investments provide a strong basis for meeting the requirements of global competition, ”says Hannu Asumalahti, CEO of the Port of Rauma. “The capacity of the container terminal almost doubled (500,000 TEU) and operational efficiency improved significantly. In addition to the unified 520 m container berth, approximately 4 hectares of new field space were added for handling containers. Finnish and British port authorities dominated the Top 20 list in a website evaluation carried out at the end of 2018. The evaluation is part of the HAZARD project of the EU’s Baltic Sea Region Interreg program, led by the University of Turku. The three-year project, worth about 4 m €, will end in April.
The websites of the main port authorities in Northern Europe were evaluated for their content and usability at the end of 2018. The evaluation covered 97 port authorities managing a total of 116 ports.
The core network ports of the EU Transport Network (TEN-T) north of Le Havre, including the British Isles, as well as the so-called ports in the comprehensive network in the Baltic Sea region with an annual traffic volume of more than 2 million tonnes of cargo or more than one million passengers. The list was supplemented by important Norwegian ports and Russian ports in the Baltic Sea region.
The evaluation focused on the English language content of the port authorities’ websites in general and the security issues communicated there, as well as the usability and quality of the sites.
Main Categories 1. Content and 2. Usability were sorted into seven groups. They focused in detail on the security of passenger and cargo operations, port features, and the usability and technical performance of the website. A total of 280 details related to content, usability and website quality were evaluated by at least two different people.
The Port of Helsinki achieved the highest scores in the evaluation. The Port of Dover ranked second, the Port of Rauma third (it was also the best of the so-called comprehensive network ports), the Port of Pori was fourth and the Port of Tallinn Fifth.
In Finland, the core network includes only the ports of HaminaKotka, Helsinki, Turku and Naantali, and the comprehensive network includes 12 ports.

Rauman Satama Oy will start work to implement stages 2 and 3 of Petäjäskis. Rock is being mined and water areas are being filled in the port part of Petäjäis. Work will begin in May and be completed in the fall of 2019. Upon completion of the investment, 9 hectares of new field space for storage use will be available.
The new completed field areas will enable the full utilization of the berth capacity of the container terminal, which was commissioned in February this year. The extra space also allows for discussions about new projects and customer relationships.
