Since June, the port and vessel service operations of the Port of Rauma have been handled by Botnia Port Service Oy, which is a subsidiary of the Port of Rauma. Metsä Fibre Oy, a company in Metsä Group, has taken the decision to build the world’s most modern sawmill in Rauma. The total value of the investment is approximately 200 million euros. Construction work will start in the spring of 2020.
Rock blasting at the northern part of the port has started. Several trucks are transporting the rock to the new container quay which will be filled with 500 000 tonnes of rock.

Metsä Fiber, part of the Metsä Group, has decided to build the world’s most modern sawmill in Rauma. The value of the investment is approximately EUR 200 million. Construction work will begin in spring 2020. Production is scheduled to start at the sawmill during the third quarter of 2022.
For the time being, the operations of the Port of Rauma will continue as normal, the port gate will be operational and ship services will be provided 24/7. However, we have prepared for the exceptional situation caused by the spread of the coronavirus in many ways. We primarily follow and follow the instructions and regulations issued by the authorities.
The Regional State Administrative Agency has granted Rauman Satama Oy a permit to build a quay in the sea area, to deepen the front of the quay by dredging and excavation, and to dredge the entrance fairway in the city of Rauma in accordance with the application updated on 13 May 2019.
Port traffic as a whole and container traffic were at the previous year’s level. Thanks to the deeper fairway, the size of the vessel has further increased and this has a direct impact on the number of visits by vessels. This morning, the Maersk container ship Verssi Maersk arrived in the port of Rauma for the first time. The vessel will start operating in the port of Rauma on a regular basis. The ship was built in 2018 and has a whopping 200 meters in length. Welcome to the port of Rauma for Maersk!
At the turn of the year, Rauman Satama Oy and the port operator Euroports Rauma Oy carried out a customer satisfaction survey, the aim of which was to find out the satisfaction of customer companies operating in the port and to receive feedback for developing operations. The previous study was conducted in 2015.

Rauman Satama Oy has decided to launch a permitting process for future needs to expand the harbor basin and build a new berth on the western edge of the Petäjäs expansion area. “According to the port company’s experience, permit processes can take years, so preparations for expansion projects must be made in good time,” says Hannu Asumalahti, CEO of Rauman Satama Oy.
Rauman Satama Oy has published a call for tenders for the last undeveloped area of the Ulko-Petäjäs extension area. The contractor is likely to complain during August. Finnish and British port authorities dominated the Top 20 list in a website evaluation carried out at the end of 2018. The evaluation is part of the HAZARD project of the EU’s Baltic Sea Region Interreg program, led by the University of Turku. The three-year project, worth about 4 m €, will end in April.
Rauman Satama Oy will start work to implement stages 2 and 3 of Petäjäskis. Rock is being mined and water areas are being filled in the port part of Petäjäis. Work will begin in May and be completed in the fall of 2019. Upon completion of the investment, 9 hectares of new field space for storage use will be available.
