    VESSEL TRAFFIC STATISTICS:

TRAFFIC VOLUMES IN PORT OF RAUMA REMAIN ON 2018 LEVEL – IMPORTATION OF PAPER ON THE DECREASE, SAWN GOODS AND ROUND WOOD INCREASE

“All in all, traffic volumes in the port remained on the same level as in the previous year, in terms of both total traffic and container traffic. Thanks to the deeper fairway, vessel sizes have continued to grow, which has a direct impact on the number of vessels calling at the port. The larger container vessels introduced in line traffic to Rauma replaced several smaller vessels. The total tonnage of the vessels increased despite the smaller number of vessels”, concludes Hannu Asumalahti, the CEO of Port of Rauma. “The decline in the consumption of paper in the most important export countries is unfortunately reflected in a strong decrease in export volumes, but on a happier note, the vigorous growth in the amounts of sawn goods provides a ray of light.”

In 2019, a total of 5.83 million tons of cargo and 261 000 container units (TEU) were shipped through the Port of Rauma. Total traffic in the Port of Rauma matched the volumes of 2018 and the decrease in container units was less than one percent. Exports amounted to 4.06 million tons (-2.1%), imports to 1.70 million tons (+5.8%) and domestic shipments to 0.08 million tons. A total of 1087 vessels called at the Port, which was 71 less than in 2018.

Exports of pulp, sawn goods and general cargo as well as grain generated positive growth figures. As far as import volumes are concerned, the greatest increases were seen in round wood and general cargo. The largest reductions occurred in the volumes of paper exports as well as importation of china clay, pulp and oil products.

“The most important highlights for Port of Rauma in 2019 were the completion of phases 2 and 3 in the Petäjäs field area, and the start of the new expansion area 3”, Mr. Asumalahti stresses. “The planned sawmill project in Rauma is from the Port’s viewpoint extremely interesting and we look forward to the opportunity of becoming a link in the supply chain of sawn goods produced in Rauma.”
