TRAFFIC VOLUMES IN PORT OF RAUMA ON A DOWNWARD COURSE IN PANDEMIC YEAR 2020 – FOREST INDUSTRY SHIPMENTS DOWN BY ALMOST A MILLION TONS OVER PREVIOUS YEAR
“The exports of paper, pulp and sawn goods were down by almost 700 000 tons and with forest industry imports reduced by almost 300 000 tons, the total reduction was nearly a million tons”, concludes Hannu Asumalahti, Managing Director of Port of Rauma. “Unfortunately there were hardly any positive news regarding exports and imports last year. However, domestic traffic brought about also good news, with 240 000 tons of domestic shipments of fuel oils reaching a record level. The total port traffic amounted to five million tons, showing a decrease of 13.8 percent over the previous year.”
In 2020, a total of 5.03 million tons of goods were handled in the port of Rauma, as well as 219 000 container units (TEU). The number of containers was down by 16.4 percent. Exports accounted for 3.34 million tons (-17.6%) of the port’s traffic, imports for 1.46 million tons (-4.8%) and domestic traffic for 0.24 million tons (+203%). A total of 944 vessels called at the port, which was 134 less than in 2019.
“Construction works for the fourth phase of the Petäjäs expansion area continued in the port of Rauma in 2020”, Mr. Asumalahti tells. “Metsä Fibre is building a large-scale sawmill in Rauma and the port is preparing for the handling of the sawmill’s products starting in 2022. Other development projects are also being planned with customers, but it will still take years to compensate for such massive losses in traffic volumes with other goods. The closures of production capacity announced by the forest industry towards the end of 2020 will regrettably have a negative effect on the traffic volumes also in 2021.”
